Education

General Studies (Associate of Arts)

Vermilion Community College January 2016 - December 2020 Interdisciplinary Studies

My journey at Vermilion Community College culminated in an Associate of Arts in General Studies—an achievement that went far beyond earning a credential. The A.A. program in "Interdisciplinary Studies" provided a rigorous academic foundation spanning humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, and essential communication skills. Every element of the curriculum was meticulously designed to develop proficiency in advanced writing, research, statistics, and project management—building a skill set that would serve as the cornerstone of my future academic and professional pursuits.

Core coursework included composition, American literature, speech, psychology, sociology, history, world civilizations, environmental studies, wellness/health science, geology, and mathematics—each of which contributed to my ability to understand complex issues, analyze problems from multiple perspectives, and integrate knowledge across disciplines. This holistic approach to education was essential to developing a well-rounded intellectual background.

Vermilion placed a strong emphasis on communication skills—both written and verbal. Intensive writing assignments honed my abilities in academic research, critical analysis, and persuasive communication. Rigorous coursework in composition, research writing, and public speaking entrenched my foundation in grammar, structure, and argumentation. Collaborative projects and dynamic presentations prepared me to communicate effectively in diverse professional environments.

The academic standards at Vermilion were challenging, particularly given my young age. I consistently maintained a 3.86 GPA, with a stellar track record in advanced coursework such as Environmental Studies, Geology, and Statistics. Navigating online classes and self-directed studies demanded exceptional time management, organization, independence, and adaptability. These experiences not only prepared me for continued academic success but also taught valuable lessons in accountability and self-discipline.

Research projects required synthesizing information from scholarly articles, case studies, and academic journals. These assignments enhanced my analytical skills and provided a strong foundation for evidence-based practice in any field. Whether it was analyzing historical events, conducting interviews, or writing literature reviews—these research endeavours challenged me to go deeper, question assumptions, and present evidence-based arguments.

Vermilion's innovative approach to education emphasized collaboration, teamwork, and real-world application. Participating in group projects, team presentations, peer review exercises, and community service initiatives prepared me for the collaborative nature of today's workforce. These projects fostered the development of leadership skills, effective communication, and a deep commitment to helping others reach their full potential.

Graduating magna cum laude at the age of 19 with a 3.86 GPA, I was recognized for my academic achievement and inducted into the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Additionally, I was selected to receive the President's Award for Academic Excellence—an honor reserved for students who have demonstrated exceptional scholastic accomplishment.

My time at Vermilion was transformative on both a personal and intellectual level. The program encouraged self-reflection, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for continuous learning. Achieving the Associate of Arts degree not only validated my academic abilities but also reinforced my belief in my potential for continued growth and lifelong learning opportunities.

Vermilion's curriculum provided a strong liberal arts foundation, advanced writing skills, critical thinking abilities, and research acumen that prepared me to navigate diverse challenges throughout my career. The education I received in General Studies laid the groundwork for my later success in Environmental Outdoor Education as well as professional roles across helping professions, information technology, and leadership positions.

Earning my Associate of Arts degree at 19 stands as a major milestone—demonstrating that hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence pave the way for future opportunities and lasting personal growth. I am proud to be a graduate of Vermilion Community College and deeply grateful for the transformative education and experiences the institution provided.

Environmental Outdoor Education / Environmental Studies

University of Minnesota Duluth January 2019 - December 2019 Environmental Studies

My experience at University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) in the Environmental Outdoor Education program provided me with a comprehensive, interdisciplinary education that shaped my career in environmental education, sustainability, and community engagement.

The Environmental Outdoor Education curriculum at UMD was academically rigorous, with coursework covering a broad spectrum of environmental sciences, including ecology, conservation biology, environmental chemistry, earth sciences, geography, and resource management. Through advanced courses in biology, chemistry, and environmental systems, I developed deep scientific understanding and critical thinking skills essential for environmental literacy and effective problem-solving.

UMD's program emphasized experiential learning—integrating theoretical knowledge with hands-on activities, field studies, research projects, and practical application. Field-based courses took students into diverse ecosystems for direct environmental study. Projects included research, environmental assessments, water quality monitoring, and environmental impact analyses.

Sustainability was a core focus, with emphasis on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem management, and conservation biology. Policy courses examined: climate change, resource allocation, environmental law, and energy policy. Through internships, I gained leadership experience managing local sustainability projects and environmental education outreach.

The program prepared me for leadership roles in adventure education. Training in wilderness medicine, trip planning, risk management, and outdoor leadership enabled me to safely and effectively lead groups in wilderness settings. I also developed camp programming and environmental education curriculum tailored to diverse audiences, including youth, families, and community groups.

UMD's program fostered direct involvement in research, hands-on fieldwork, and collaborative projects that strengthened my communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. These experiences enhanced my adaptability and versatility in interdisciplinary environmental work. I developed essential skills in project management, teamwork, research, and public engagement.

The program encouraged professional networking, internships, and collaborative research with faculty, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. Participation in symposia and environmental forums expanded my professional network and reinforced best practices in leadership, community engagement, and environmental advocacy.

Inspired by my experience at UMD, I continue to pursue lifelong learning in environmental science and outdoor education. My education at UMD provided a strong foundation for developing my own sustainability initiatives, integrating eco-conscious practices in every aspect of my professional and personal life. I am committed to leaving a positive legacy for generations to come.
